Installing Leak-Resistant Golf Course Lake Liners
For Trump National Golf Club, a leak in one of its water feature’s liners would be a real “hazard.”

“The course is situated on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, an area subject to landslides due to excessive groundwater that lubricates the slide planes,” explained Shannon Goodrich, Dudek’s senior construction manager who managed the design and construction of Trump National’s lake at hole nine as well as two waterfalls. “With absolutely no tolerance for leakage, we designed and installed a redundant, high-tech lake lining system.” The lake design was certified by a third party registered geologist.

This lining system, rare in golf course construction, consists of double composite high-density polyethylene (HDPE) – an industrial-grade material used most often in solid waste facilities. A high-tech monitoring system was also installed to detect weaknesses/breaches in the liner.

When constructing decorative lakes and other golf course water features, Goodrich recommends:
  • Investing in grading preparations, ensuring the soils are well compacted.
  • Reviewing plans often and thoroughly to ensure contractors are building precisely to specifications. This helps identify variations early and allows for cost-effective revisions.
  • Performing significant quality assurance/quality control tests to determine the liner’s durability.

“The burden is on construction managers to ensure the liners are properly installed, ultimately contributing to a high-quality, aesthetically pleasing water feature,” concluded Goodrich.
