As-Needed Biological Services Preserve Utility's Resources

Challenge: Southern California Edison (SCE) needed a cost-effective way to support its biological resources protection programs.

Project Scope: Dudek provides as-needed biological consulting services.

Resolution: Dudek’s as-needed biological services have spanned more than 30 projects in four Southern California counties. In this relationship, SCE saves valuable internal resources by relying on Dudek’s team to:

Conduct general biological surveys along various transmission and distribution right-of-ways or at specific pole sites
Respond quickly to emergency situations where poles are damaged by wind storms, fires and floods and providing survey and monitoring services for such projects
Conduct focused surveys for state- and/or federally-listed species

Additionally, Dudek’s biological services team leads SCE’s hazard tree removal project within a 106 square mile section of the San Bernardino National Forest and surrounding areas. For this large-scale and logistically complex project, Dudek conducts biological surveys prior to the removal of diseased or damaged trees that reside near poles, lines and other facilities. These surveys help the utility avoid impacts to species protected under the federal Endangered Species Act.
