Conducting Rare Plant Surveys on Newhall Ranch’s 12,000 Acres

Challenge: While planning a major land development project on 12,000 acres, Newhall Land discovered a plant previously thought to be extinct.

Project Scope: Dudek conducted focused surveys for the newly discovered plant and other potentially-occurring sensitive plants in a region of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

Resolution: As a condition of the Newhall Ranch Specific Plan Area (SPA) environmental impact report (EIR), Newhall turned to Dudek to conduct surveys for three years at Newhall Ranch and two other project sites for sensitive plant species including the state-listed San Fernando Valley spineflower. Dudek prepared a spineflower conservation plan for Newhall, recommending options for managing this native species that was previously thought to be extinct in the 1930s. Dudek is currently providing the following services for Newhall Land:
  • Restoration and monitoring of native grasslands
  • Wildlife studies
  • Wetlands restoration
  • Construction monitoring
  • Transplantation and monitoring of slender mariposa lily and Plummer’s mariposa lily
