Fast-Tracking Forcemain Break Repair Using Trenchless Technology

Challenge: After two forcemain breaks at a busy suburban intersection and near an environmentally-sensitive lagoon, Leucadia County Water District needed to quickly respond to the failures.

Project Scope: Dudek designed, conducted site surveys and managed the construction process of replacing two failed sewage pipes using trenchless technology.

Resolution: Leucadia County Water District, which provides sewer service to 52,000 customers in Encinitas and Carlsbad, experienced two line breaks in less than one month. To remedy this potentially disastrous situation, the district turned to Dudek to design a replacement scheme and manage its installation. Dudek creatively tackled the issue by installing an alternative horizontal directional drilling (HDD) method for alignment of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping. As a result of this approach, Dudek saved significant time in the planning, design and permitting process while efficiently managing construction to complete the project ahead of schedule with virtually no impact to the public or nearby lagoon.
