Southern California-based Firm Earns First Place for Work on Major Sewer Siphon Project

Encinitas, Calif. – February 8, 2005 – Dudek, a leading Southern California engineering and environmental consulting firm, today announced that it has been recognized with the prestigious 2004 Engineering Achievement Award by the California Water Environmental Association Colorado River Basin Section. The firm was recognized for its impressive design and innovative construction methods employed during the creation of a major sewer siphon in Coachella Valley for its client, Valley Sanitary District.

Experiencing a large population increase in the northern region of Indio, Calif., Valley Sanitary District needed to modify its sewer infrastructure to support the influx of new residents. The district turned to Dudek to design an upgrade of a 1,300 foot inverted sewer siphon from 15-inch pipe to 54-inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. Based on the Dudek plans, this installation became the first of its type to employ horizontal directional drilling (HDD) construction – an environmentally-friendly method that minimizes site impact and reduces clean up time. As a result of the upgrade, the sewer siphon can accommodate a range of flows for years to come.
