Dudek, NCTD Earn Environmental Award for Turning Old Trailer Park into Wetlands
Environmental Project Helped Mitigate Impacts from New 22-mile Light Rail Project
Encinitas, Calif. – September 25, 2007 – Creating a beautiful wetlands from the remnants of a trailer park as part of the new Sprinter light rail development earned Dudek and North County Transit District (NCTD) the prestigious 2007 Honor Award from the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) San Diego & Imperial Counties Chapter.
Presented for Dudek’s work to create wetlands near Escondido Creek, the award honors the innovative planning and design approaches Dudek took to help NCTD mitigate environmental impacts from the new 22-mile Oceanside-to-Escondido Sprinter Rail construction.
“The Sprinter will provide a valuable public service by transporting thousands of passengers each day,” said Eric Kosty with NCTD. “We’re pleased to be recognized for our efforts in creating a top-notch wetlands habitat that allowed us to bring the rail project to fruition.”
“One innovative aspect of this project was how we restored a former trailer park to its pre-park condition while reusing the cut soil to fill old slopes where trailer pads once stood,” said Paul Walsh, a Dudek landscape architect and habitat restoration specialist. “We appreciate North County Transit District’s vision and commitment to develop high quality wetlands that meets their mitigation needs."
NCTD sought to create off-site wetlands as part of its Sprinter Rail project’s environmental mitigation and turned to Dudek to design the five-acre wetlands mitigation project. More than 3,200 plants were used to transform upland weeds and trailer park remnants into a native riparian habitat area that provides nesting and foraging habitat for native wildlife, increases flood flow capacity, and reduced the likelihood of wildfires. As a result, NCTD now has a thriving wetlands habitat emerging along Escondido Creek near Escondido.
