Due to State Route 56 construction impacts, the City of San Diego sought to restore and enhance wetlands in nearby Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. The city turned to Dudek to design this 26.6-acre mitigation project that reestablishes Peñasquitos Creek’s historic flow and adjacent wetlands. More than 4,900 native plants were salvaged and reused in addition to local plant and seed materials to return this open space area to its previous freshwater marsh and open water environment. As a result, the City of San Diego now has a thriving wetlands habitat emerging within its Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.
“This project involved substantial research and planning to reintroduce native wetlands habitats such as southern willow scrub, oak-sycamore woodland and freshwater marsh,” said Mike Sweesy, Dudek’s principal landscape architect and senior habitat restoration specialist. “We’re pleased to be recognized for our efforts in delivering to the city a practical solution that meets their mitigation needs.”
