Encinitas, CA – April 6, 2009 – Dudek won an Award of Excellence from The American Society of Civil Engineers San Diego chapter for providing construction management on the City of Carlsbad's new fire station that faced a number of construction challenges, including being built in a habitat preserve.
The award recognizes Dudek’s construction management team – which specializes in municipal facilities -- for successfully managing the following challenges on construction of the $4.1 million Fire Station #6:
- Building the fire station within a habitat preserve required extensive environmental work to address potential impacts as well as monitor construction to minimize and/or avoid impacts to the preserve. Dudek’s habitat restoration team is currently conducting long-term monitoring of the site.
- Siting the fire station on a rocky hilltop made installation of driveways, signals and utilities especially difficult as contractors has to bore through solid rock.
- Constructing the station during a sagging economy resulted in replacing several subcontractors and suppliers who either went out of business or refused to perform. The contractor re-sequenced his work activities and brought in his own workforce to continue progress while he worked with the city through a streamlined substitution process to replace the subcontractors and suppliers. This joint effort effectively minimized impacts to the project schedule.
- Exporting 10,000 cubic yards of excavated rock through a small residential neighborhood and the surrounding preserve without disrupting either. This was successfully accomplished through a major public affairs program set up by the team, involving door-to-door and face-to-face visits with residents as well as setting up a project telephone hotline for resident concerns.
